When using the preposition "desde" in a sentence, although the verb in the statement may be in the present tense, the meaning is carried into a past feeling. In English the statement would then be translated into a past tense.
Estudio español desde octubre.
Vivo aquí desde entonces.
I am studying Spanish since October.
stated
I am living here since then.
I've been studying Spanish since October.
implied
I have been living here since then.
