Forming Plurals

Today you learn to deal with nouns, seeing as to how they are all masculine or feminine.
Let's go back and look at the Introduction to Gender page first. After reviewing that page, hit the "back" button, and come back to this page.
Now that we know about masculine & feminine, let's look at making the words plural (more than one).

Formation of plurals
If a noun ends in a vowel [a, e, i, o, u] add an " S " !!!
cama lente colibrí perro emeu
camas lentes colibrís perros emeus

If a noun ends in any other letter, add an " ES " !!!
edad reloj papel conductor mar
edades relojes papeles conductores mares

If a noun ends in a consonant, and contains an accented final syllable, the accent will disappear in the plural form - because the addition of the -es will shift the natural stress to the next-to-last-syllable anyway!!!
cajón nación ratón pelón león
cajones naciones ratones pelones leones

If a noun ends in " Z ", the Z changes to a " C " !!! Why?
lombriz codorniz cicatriz lataz lápiz
lombrices codornices cicatrices lataces lápices
Go through all sections of the pronunciation guide a few times, if you feel confused about the pronunciation of any word or spellings.

If you thoroughly understand the rules you just covered, do these exercises:
To form the plural in Spanish:
Add an S to any noun ending in a, e, i, o, or u.
Add ES to all others.

Change the nouns in the left column to the plural. Hi-lite the center cell to see if you're correct.

Spelling rules:
* If the noun ending with a consonant has an accented final syllable, the accent is lost in the plural.
** If the noun ends in a -Z . . . the plural will end -CES ( Z changes to C --- to maintain the "soft" sound ).

Starting Points in Language Study:

What's a noun?

It's any person, place, or thing - or anything that has a name.

It also has to be, and can do verbs, i.e. do actions of some sort.

When you only have one item - one noun - it's singular. If there are more than one of any given item, then it's plural. Plural means "more than one."
