Spanish Verb Conjugation: Indicative Mood: Preterite Tense
Preterite Tense: ER & IR Verbs with Stem ending in Vowel

©RCAguilar

OBJECTIVE:
Look at these verbs carefully, and decipher what's really going on, so it doesn't seem like another random pitfall.
TASK:
Work mostly with the forms that are different, because you should already have the more normal forms down by now.
PERPLEXED?
It really probably is just gas.
What's happening in these verbs?
If you speak Spanish and never, ever learn how to write it, you'd have an easy time with this tense.
The written endings may seem a bit strange, but if you follow the patterns for regular ER & IR verbs just OUT LOUD, you'll notice that a little extra effort has to be placed where the stem drops off with a vowel.
This extra effort is reflected by the written accented i - as well as the change-over to a y at times.
Look at the verbs that you're dealing with first, and just try to conjugate them as regular verbs - but doing so in the preterite tense. LISTEN carefully to each form, and then later check out spellings.
It should make more sense then.

Preterite Tense: -ER & -IR verb conjugation: Verbs with stems ending in vowels
Many ER & IR verbs are not affected by irregularities in any way in the formation of the preterite tense.
ER & IR verbs whose stems end in a vowel need a strong Y to replace the I in 3rd person forms.
These forms also accent the I in all other forms if the preceding vowel is strong, to avoid formation of a diphthong.
yo -í nosotros, nosotras -ímos *
-íste * vosotros, vosotras -ísteis *
él, ella, Usted - ellos, ellas, Ustedes -yeron
ER caer to fall fallen
creer to believe glauben
leer to read lesen
proveer to provide bereitstellen
IR construir to build, construct bauen
destruir to destroy zerstören
excluir to exclude ausschließen
oír to hear hören
To make the preterite forms, drop the -er or -ir from the end of the infinitive and add the endings given above.
*The forms with an asterisk are accented only when the i would be merged into a diphthong and lose its stress.
